Tribe takes 2 of 3 in Motown

8/28 - 8/30 - Tiger Stadium - Detroit, MI
GAME 1 - Indians 8, Tigers 1

With almost 2/3 of the season left to play is it too early to concede the AL Cy CalMcLishCyYoung award to Cal McLish (4-0, 1.25) ?  The good news is that the Tigers did get 7 hits off him, including 3 by Harvey Kuenn, but they were only able to get 1 run.  While this was happening Frank Larry was imploding to the tune of 4 runs in less than 2 innings of less than stellar work.  It's flat out unfair how Rocky Colavito is assaulting AL pitchers.  Today he went 3 for 5 with an RBI/Run and raised his season average to .472.  There should be a law against this type of offensive prowess, shouldn't there be ?  Overshadowed was the 4 hit performance by Vic Power (4-6, 2 Runs/1 RBI).  Rocky isn't perfect he did make an error in right field, but since it didn't lead to a run who could complain ?

GAME 2 - Indians 6, Tigers 4RockyColavitoTriple
”The Rock” (Rocky Colavito)  only went 1 for 3, so his average "dipped" to .464.  Of  course that one was a 2 run homer in the 7th that just happened to tie the game up.  Cleveland, being the juggernaut that it is scored 2 more in the 9th when Russ Nixon singled with 1 out and Woodie Held hit a 2 run shot off of Detroit reliever Harry Byrd.  Hoyt Wilhelm pitched a perfect 9th for the save in relief of Jim "Mudcat" Grant (2-1, 3.00), who got the win.  Russ Nixon had a 3 hit day.  Harvey Kuenn had 2 of Detroit's 6 hits.

GAME 3 - Tigers 3, Indians 2
The Tigers avoided the sweep with a close to the vest 3-2 victory.  Bill Hoeft pitched great for 7 innings, but was victimized by his defense.  Both Kuenn and Ray Boone made key errors that led to 2 unearned runs for the Indians.  That left Detroit down 2-1 as Ray Narleski had only allowed a 1st inning solo run until that point.  As the bottom of the 9th approached Narleski looked to close it out.  He would not get another out.  Don "rabbit ears" Mossi came on in relief to put ou the RonSamfordfire, but he just wasn't up to the task either.  In that fateful inning Charlie Maxwell led off with a double.  Ray Boone followed with a single and so did House who got an RBI when Maxwell scored to tie it.  Frank Bolling bunted the runners up, but Johnny Groth grounded back to Mossi, who held the runners and then tossed to first for the 2nd out.  The game looked to go into extra frames when light hitting pinch hitter Ron Samford singled to center to score Boone as the Tigers avoided the sweep.
