Tigers cruise by M’s: Sweep gets Motown back to .500

September 1 Kingdome.  Jim Bunning and Randy Johnson Red_Wilson_DET both gave the kind of start you could come to expect from the pair, with Bunning giving up one run in 8 innings and Johnson none in 8 innings.  Unfortunately neither was around to see the end of the game.  The Mariners struck first in the 7th on a single by Mike Felder , a passed ball and a single by Omar Vizquel.  Johnson made it stand up but gave way to closer Norm Charlton in the 9th who promptly allowed a game tying homer to Ray Boone (1).  In the 14th, Dennis Powell gave up a one out double to Johnny Groth, then walks to  Jim Finigan and Frank Bolling.  Red Wilson hit a sacrifice fly to give the Tigers the lead then Bill Harvey_Kuenn_DETTuttle doubled home two.  Harvey Kuenn followed with a double to make the score 5-1.  Frank Lary who has been worse than miserable as a starter this season had come on in the 13th inning and closed out the game with a 1-2-3 14th to earn the win (2-3, 8.55)  Powell took the loss (0-2, 10.29)  Tigers 5  Mariners 1

September 2 Kingdome.  Bret Boone, grandson of TheBoones Tiger 1b-3b Ray Boone doubled in the second and scored on Dave Valle's single.  In the 4th Bret Boone homered (1) and smiled at his grandfather as he rounded third.  In the fifth, Dave Philley opened with a single and Earl Torgeson, making his first appearance of the season followed with his first hit of the season.  Bolling bunted the runners on and Tuttle grounded to short to score one.  Kuenn singled to score Torgeson and tie the game.  In the 6th, Al Kaline led off with a double and Charley Maxwell wasDave_Philley_DET intentionally walked.  Dave Philley singled home Kaline and Torgeson loaded the bases with a single of his own.  Bolling singled home another run then Tuttle got another rbi on a groundout.  Starter Duke Maas got the win (1-0, 3.09) with relief help from Lou Sleater (2 saves, 2.35).  Starter Eric Hanson (1-2, 4.10) took the loss.  Tigers 5  Mariners 2

September 3  Tiger Stadium.  The Tigers celebrated Al_Kaline_DET manager Tom Davis' birthday with their first sweep of the season.  Al Kaline got things going in the first with his second homer of the season.  Mike Blowers knocked in two unearned runs for the Mariners in the 3rd to give them the lead.  However Bolling tied it in the 4th with his first dinger of the year.  Frank House hit a two runPaul_Foytack_DET shot  in the 5th for his team leading 4th homer of the season.  Paul Foytack (3-0, 2.93) pitched 6 strong innings and gave way to new bull pen sensation Frank Lary who finished the game for his first save of the season by throwing 3 scoreless innings.  (1 save, 7.43)   Tigers 4  Mariners 2
