Gullickson’s 1 hitter helps ‘Spos take 2 of 3 from LA

9/4 - 9/5 - Olympic Stadium - Montreal, QC
9/6 - Dodger Stadium Los Angeles, CA
GAME 1 - Dodgers 8, Expos 0
Don_Drysdale_LAD As the Dodgers hover below the mediocrity level there is one major bright spot, Don Drysdale.  Double D usually has little or know margin for errors in the games that he pitches in.  How else can you explain the fact that he has a 3-1 record, but a miniscule 0.57 ERA ?  It seems almost impossible to comprehend how he could have lost any games with that ERA.  LA got on the scoreboard first when Frank Howard hit is first homer of the season.  In the 5th LA made it 2-0 when Maury Wills singled home John Roseboro.Frank_Howard_LAD   Montreal's Scott Sanderson put in one of those 6IP/3ER "quality starts", but that type of quality will put you on the short side of the ledger every time vs Drysdale.  With the score 5-0 the Dodgers scored 3 more in the 9th to make this a laugher.  In that inning Ron Fairly hit a 2 run homer and Tommy Davis followed him with a solo shot to right.

GAME 2 - Expos 2, Dodgers 0
Bill_Gullickson_MON There was a no hitter in progress until a line shot double off the wall in the 6th inning ended it.  Most would jump to the conclusion that it was Sandy Koufax who was authoring that no hitter and most times you'd be dead on right.  This time however, it was from the unlikely source of Bill Gullickson.  With Koufax on the hill the Expos knew they would need a near perfect pitching performance and they would need to manufacture runs.  Put a check mark on both items, since this was the recipe they followed.  In the bottom of the 3rd Tim Raines bunted his way on and stole his 16th base of the season.  Manny Trillo bunted him over to third and Al Oliver overcame the nastiest lefty of them all to hit a sac fly to center toAndre_Dawson_MON score Raines.  In the 6th "the Hawk", Andre Dawson led off the inning with a solo shot.  Gullickson was keeping the Dodger hitters off stride all day and the only blemish on his record was a leadoff double in the 6th by John Roseboro.  Koufax turned out to be the hard luck loser in this one as Gullickson recorded the 1 hit shutout victory.

GAME 3 - Expos 8, Dodgers 3
Tim_Raines_MON Expo ace, Steve Rogers, started out looking more like a joker.  After allowing a lead off single to Wills in the bottom of the first Rogers gave up a 2 run shot to Willie Davis.  LA's Phil Ortega held that lead until the 4th when Montreal tied it up.  Tim Raines led off with a single and stole second to increase his league leading SB count to 17.  Doug Flynn bunted him over to 3rd.  Al Oliver walked to put runners on the corners and Dawson singled home Raines to make it 2-1.  Dawson got greedy and tried to steal second, but was thrown out by Doug Camilli.  Tim Wallach picked up his buddy and singled home Oliver with 2 outs.  Ortega would implode in the sixth, when Montreal scored 3 runs to take a 5-2 lead.  The big hit of the inning was a 1 out 2 run double by "the kid" Gary Carter, which scored Dawson and Wallach.  A solo run by LA cut the lead to 5-3 in the 7th, but 3 unanswered Montreal runs in the top of the 9th put the game out of reach.  Jim Brewer was on the hill and he shockingly gave up a 1 out homer to lefty Al Oliver.  The shock here is that Brewer is usually poison to lefties and Oliver isAl_Oliver_MON abysmal when facing lefties.  Warren Cromartie singled home Wallach and Carter to give Rogers more than enough runs to play with.  Rogers (4-1, 2.39) closed out the contest and recorded the complete game.  Ortega went only 6 and gave up 5 runs (4 earned) as his record dropped to 0-3 on the season.  Wallach went 4 for 5.  Dawson went 2 for 5 and for the first time all season his average went above .300.
