A’s blow chance @ sweep: take 2 of 3 from BOS

9/1 - 9/2 - Oakland Coliseum - Oakland, CA
GAME 1 - A's 4, Red Sox 1

Catfish_Hunter_OAK It's easy to see how Catfish Hunter has 3 wins.  It's hard to fathom how he has 2 losses with that miniscule 1.50 ERA.  Oakland finally decided to score some runs for their ace and he rewarded them by allowing only 1 meaningless run to score in the 8th.  The A's posted 3 in the 3rd when Dick Green singled with 1 out and Danny Cater doubled him over to third.  After Reggie Jackson struck out, Sal Bando came through in the clutch with a 2 run single.  Bando went to 2nd on an errant throw to the plate that overshot the cutoff man.  Rick Monday singled home Bando, but was cut down trying to turn his hit into a double.  The A's made it 4-0 with an unearned run in the 7th.  Both Dick Green and Danny Cater reached base with 2 outs thanks to errors by Dick Gernert at 1st and Ted Lepcio at short.  Jackson came through this time with an RBI single to provide all the insurance Hunter would need.  Sammy White doubled home Dick Gernert in the 8th to break the shutout.

GAME 2 - Red Sox 5, A's 4
John "Blue Moon" Odom was his own worst enemy.  He wasHoot_Evers_BOS constantly reaching 3-2 counts and walked 6 batters in under 7 innings of work, so he was lifted in favor of Paul Lindblad who was alright until the 9th when he allowed a one out single to Faye Throneberry.  Looking for the righty/righty matchup the A's manager pulled Lindblad in favor of Diego Segui, who got rattled after Throneberry stole second.  The following pitch went right down the middle and former Tiger Hoot Evers slammed it over the fence in center to make it 5-4 Boston.  Evers' 4th homer of the season gave the Bosox a 1 run lead, which Ellis Kinder protected easily for his 2nd save of the season.

9/3 - Fenway Park - Boston, MA
GAME 3 - A's 6, Red Sox 3

Chuck_Dobson_OAK Today's game was aptly titled, "The Chuck Dobson Show".  Oakland's starter not only went the distance and notched his 4th win (4-0, 2,38), but he also had 2 RBI singles.  Dobson's first single broke the ice in the second to make it 1-0.  His single in the 4th made it 2-0.  His pitching in the 4th made it 2-2 as Billy Goodman blooper just fell in front of Jackson and behind Ted Kubiak to score Throneberry.  Vern Stephens hit a sac fly to right to tie it.  In the top of the 5th Red Sox starter walked Kubiak to lead off the inning.  Danny Cater hit a rocket to George Kell at third that flat out ate him up alive.  Jackson line a bullet to left for the 1st out of the inning, but Parnell walked Bando to load the bases and hasten his untimely exit.  Ralph Brickner took over on the hill to face Mike Hershberger, who grounded weakly to 2nd to score Kubiak to make it 3-2.  With 1 out in the home half of the 6th George KellBilly_Goodman_BOS singled to the opposite field.  On a perfectly executed hit and run, Billy Goodman singled to right and Kell wound up on 3rd.  Dick Gernet took Dobson's 2-0 offering and drilled it back thru the box and just beyond the diving arms of Oakland shortstop Bert Campaneris.  Kell scored to tie the game at 3.  Little did the Sahx know but that would be the last run that Dobson would allow.  Ray Scarborough came on to pitch the 7th and was immediately greeted by a bloop single by Kubiak.  The next batter, Danny Cater, was hit in the ribs.  Manager Paul Johnson was finished with Scarborough and replaced him with George Schmees, who walked  Reggie on 5 pitches to load the bases.  Gumpert lost control and hit Bando in the mid section to Jim_Piersall_BOSforce in a run to make it 4-3.  Hershberger hit into a tailor made 6-4-3 DP, but Cater scored the second run of the inning to make it 5-3.  Rick Monday sliced a liner to short that handcuffed rookie Jim Piersall, which allowed Monday to reach 1st safely, but more importantly allowed Jackson to score the third run of the inning to make it 6-3 Oakland.  Dobson would be perfect the rest of the way as the A's went on to win easily 6-3.
