Tribe takes 2 of 3 from Pale Hose

8/16 - 8/17 - Cleveland Stadium - Cleveland, OH
GAME 1: Indians 9, White Sox 2
The Tribe exploded for 5 runs off White Sox starter Stan Bahnsen in the bottom of the 7th to blow the doors off this contest. Gary "Ding Dong" Bell went the distance and gave up only 2 runs en-route to his first victory of the season. Both of Chicago's runs came on solo shots (Bucky Dent & Ken Henderson). Larry Doby had 4 RBI's and a tater of his own for the victors.

GAME 2: Indians 4, White Sox 2
Jim Kaat (7 IP / 2 ER) pitched well enough to win. Cal McLish pitched a bit better (9 IP / 2 ER), and not so shockingly he won his second of the season. The game was scoreless until the Tribe posted 2 in the bottom of the 4th when catcher Russ Nixon singled home Mickey Vernon and Minnie Minoso. The Chisox made it 2-1 when they scored a run in the 6th off a Dick "Don't call me Richie" Allen solo shot. Young Goose Gossage came on in relief of Kaat with the sole purpose of maintaining the status quo and allowing his team's offense a chance to tie it. Gossage threw hard, but did not have command of the strike zone. He walked leadoff hitter Larry Doby, then fanned Nixon for the first out. Bobby Avila doubled to put runners on 2nd and 3rd. Bill Moran singled home Doby, but Avila was cut down by Carlos May at the plate for the second out. This looked to be the spark the Chisox needed, but Gossage proceeded to walk the opposing pitcher (McLish) and the serve up an RBI single to Vic Power to put the Tribe up by 3. Bill Melton hit a solo shot off McLish to make it 4-2 in the 9th, but that was as close as it would get.

8/18 - Comiskey Park - Chicago, IL
GAME 3: White Sox 2, Indians 1
Lefty Knuckleballer/Iron Man, Wilbur Wood took the hill for the Chisox and figured out early on what he needed to do in order to win. He needed to allow less than 2 runs, since that's pretty much all he could expect his offense to prove him. Knowing the correct recipe and cooking up the right meal are sometimes two different things. Not this time. Wood did just what he needed to do in order to help the Pale Hose avoid the sweep. Chicago posted their customary 2 runs in the 2nd when Dick Allen led off with a walk and lefty hitting catcher Ed Hermann cranked a 2 run shot. Wood would make that stand up all the way until the 9th when he got into a bit of a jam. After Rocky Colavito flew out to shallow center, Minoso singled then moved to third when Doby followed suit. With the infield back Avila hit a room service hop to Melton at third and forced Doby at second for the second out of the inning. Second baseman Jorge Orta was slow on the pivot and could not complete to DP, thus allowing Minoso to score Chicago's first run of the day. With 2 outs and a man on the score was 2-1. Wood was called on a balk as he was paying way too much attention to Avila at first. The batter (Brown) was then given an intentional pass to create a force at all the bases. Pete Ward was called on to pinch hit, but couldn't touch the floaters that Wood offered him. Wood fanned Ward on 4 pitches to win the game and prevent the sweep.
