Tribe sweeps Bombers in Bronx

8/12 - Yankee Stadium - Indians 3, Yankees 1
Cal McLish went the distance for a complete game victory over the Bronx Bombers. McLish gave up a solo run in the 8th when Bobby Murcer doubled home Danny Cater. Cleveland nibbled away at Yankee starter Mel Stottlemyre with solo runs in the 2nd, 6th and 8th. Vic Power was 3 for 4 with 2 RBI's. Every Indian starter had a hit. Stottlemyre did a great job of getting out of trouble and getting by without his best stuff, but could not get any sustained offensive support.

The Tribe jumped out to a quick 3 run lead in the top of the 1st off of Yankee starter Friz Peterson. After Vic Power scored on a Rocky Colavito sac fly, Larry Doby hit a 2 run homer to the short porch in right. That lead held up until the 5th when Horace Clarke singled home Roy White and Danny Cater to make it a 1 run ballgame. By this point Peterson settled into a groove and would not allow another run the rest of the game. They Yanks tied it in the bottom of the 8th when Ron Blomberg scored on a Thurman Munson fielder's choice. By this point both Peterson and his opposite number, Jim "Mudcat" Grant were both finished for the day. The Yanks called on Roger Hambright who gave up a solo shot to Ward and a 2 run shot to Rocky Colavito. Hoyt Wilhelm came on and gave up 2 hits, but found his way out of the jam to save the game. Don Mossi, who pitched a scoreless 8th got the win as neither starter figured into the decision.

On a cold rainy day neither team could rely on their pitching. Both offenses were in high gear. Cleveland's offense amped it up a bit more in order to nail down the rare road sweep. The Bombers were up 6-4 when Mike Kekich gave up 3 runs in the 7th to flush away the lead. Russ Nixon's 2 run triple scored Minnie Minoso and Larry Doby. Nixon scored on Bobby Avila's suicide squeeze for that all important insurance run. Don Ferrarese, who relieved an ineffective Ray Narleski in the 6th went 3+ innings without yielding a run and was rewarded with a well earned victory. Larry Doby banged out 4 hits in 5 trips to the plate. Bobby Murcer continued his hot hitting (.545) in the series in a losing cause.
