Reg-gie & Catfish spell doom for Halos

8/20 - 8/22 - Oakland Coliseum
GAME 1 - A's 9, Angels 4
John "Blue Moon" Odom survived for 7 innings vs the big bats from Anaheim and only yielded 4 runs, but the highlight of his day was the solo shot he hit in the bottom of the 2nd off Kent Bottenfield.  Odom cruised until the 7th when he gave up a 3 run shot to Garrett Anderson that tied the game.  Oakland struck back with 4 in the bottom half of the inning to blow the game wide open.  Pinch hitter Dick Green's 2 run single started broke the 4-4 deadlock.  Sal Bando and Rick Monday followed with RBI singles of their own.  Sprague (8th) and Jack Aker (9th) came on to toss scoreless innings to close the game out in a non-save situation.

GAME 2 - A's 1, Angels 0
HOF'er Jim "Catfish" Hunter (2-1, 1.08) made it look easy tossing a 4 hit complete game shutout.  His opponent Ortiz was pretty darn good himself, but the solo run he yielded in the 4th wound up being his undoing, when Reggie Jackson led off with a triple and scored on a routine grounder to short by Bando.  Rick Monday followed with a double, but wound up being stranded.  The closest the Halos came to tying it was in the 7th, when they had runners on 1st and second with 2 out and Adam Kennedy grounded weakly to John Donaldson at 2nd.

GAME 3 - A's 9, Angels 3
Anaheim broke the ice, but the Oakland broke their backs as Jared Washburn did nothing more than pitch batting practice.  Chuck Dobson was on cruise control and left the game after 8 innings of 3 run ball.  Tony Pierce took care of the 9th during "gar-bage time".  Reggie Jackson went 4 for 5 with 3 RBI's, 4 runs scored and 2 homers and a triple.  Jackson boosted his season average to .444.  Danny Cater was 3 for 4 with 3 runs scored and a solo homer.  Ron Gant had a pinch hit 2 run homer for the Halos who just could not solve Oakland's pitching during this Pacific Coast Highway Series.
