Braves sweep Reds after 11 inning classic

8/12 - Braves Field - Braves 2, Reds 0
Harvey Haddix could have been perfect for 13 innings (imagine that ?) and he still wouldn't have won, because Warren Spahn wasn't about to yield any runs himself. Haddix went 8 and gave up 2, but Spahn-nie tossed a complete game 5 hitter and threw only 91 pitches. The Braves scored solo runs in the 2nd and in the 6th. Bob Elliott's solo shot to lead off the second broke the ice and Sid Gordon doubled home Sam Jethroe in the 6th.

8/13 - Braves Field - Braves 6, Reds 0
Max Surkont picked up where Spahn left off by tossing a 6 hitter for the complete game shutout win. Reds' starter Bob Purkey wasn't competitive as he yielded 6 runs (5 earned) in 7 innings of work. Sam Jethroe went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI's, a walk and a double for the Braves.

8/14 - Braves Field - Braves 5, Reds 4 (11 inn)
After 9 innings of play the score was knotted at 3 apiece. Both starters (Joe Nuxhall & Johnny Sain) were long gone by then. Paine, who pitched a shutout 10th for the Braves was touched for a solo run in the top of the 11th after walking #8 hitter Roy McMillian and pitcher Jeffcoat who was trying to bunt. Leadoff man Johnny Temple bunted both runners over and PH George Crowe was given an intentional pass to load the bases up. Jerry Lynch lifted a fly to right to allow McMillian to tag up with the go ahead run. With a chance to bust the game open Frank Robby fanned and stranded 2. Things looked good for Jack Aker, who came on to close it out, but alas it was not meant to be for the Redlegs. Addis led off the inning with a walk and was immediately doubled home when Earl Torgeson crushed one that barely went out. Sibbi Sisti and Roy Hartsfied walked to load the bases with nobody out. Pinch hitter Olmo got caught looking at a borderline third strike for the first out and with Sam Jethroe up the double play ball was in need. Jethroe hit a high fly to center that Gus Bell caught easily, but he was way too far from the plate to get Torgeson who virtually strolled home for the game winner and the series sweep.
