Reds Road Show Reels in Pair vs Friars

8/20 - 8/22 - Jack Murphy Stadium - San Diego, CA
GAME 1 - Reds 3, Padres 0
haddix Harvey Haddix
just couldn't go the distance, but he didn't allow a run in the 8 innings he did work.  Cincy scored 2 in the 2nd when Ed Bailey singled home Walt Dropo, who led off the inning with a double.  After Pete Whisenant fanned 8th place hitter Roy McMillian singled, which normally would have put runners on the corners or 1st and 2nd, if not for an error by left fielder Kevin Ward.  Ward was overzealous charging the ball and he booted it back to the infield to allow the runners to take liberties.  Padre starter Craig Lefferts put in a workmanlike effort (2 ER in 7 IP), but didn't see any offensive support.  The Reds added a 3rd run in the top of the 5th, when Don Hoak scored on a Frank Robinson ground out.  Hal Jeffcoat pitched a scoreless 9th to get his first save of the season.

GAME 2 - Reds 5, Padres 4 (13 inn)
Extra innings means extra agiata for Padre Manager JoeyRandyMyers Scigliano.  If his charges finally start to hit their pitching or fielding goes south.  If it's not one thing, it's another.  Reliever Randall K Myers only needed to get 3 outs in the 9th to close out a save for Andy "Merchant of" Benes, but it was not to be.  After fanning the first 2 batter he faced (Smoky Burgess & McMillian) Myers was one out away from a happy recap.  Don Hoak walked, then Cincy pitcher Willard Schmidt singled to put runners on the corners for 2nd baseman Johnny Temple, who came through in the clutch with an RBI single of to knot it at 4.  It would stay that way until FRobinson64the top of the 13th when the Reds went ahead for good.  Jerry  Lynch led off with a walk, but was forced at 2nd by Frank Robinson who was really ticked.  Frank prides himself on his clutch hitting, and felt he let the team down.  He picked them up with his legs when he stole 2nd and went to third when Padre backup catcher Dan Walters (who did hit a HR) airmailed a throw into center.  Smoky Burgess followed with an RBI single to make it 5-4, which is how it stayed.  Schmidt went 6 scoreless innings in relief of Alex Kellner and got the win.

GAME 3 - Padres 9, Reds 4
This time the fielding went south for the Padres.  Thankfully theirBenitoSantiago bats and pitching were able to overcome the 2 costly errors (Hurst / McGriff) that they made.  Of course scoring 5 in the bottom of the 1st doesn't hurt one's team's chances one bit.  Benito Santiago's 2 run homer was the big hit of the inning.  Cincy came right back with 3 in the 2nd, but the Padres countered with 2 of their own in the 3rd when Tim "Shuffle" Teufel hit a two out two run shot.  Mike Maddux finished up going perfect over the final 4 outs.  Joe Nuxhall was lit up for 8 runs in 5 innings for the Reds who took 2 of 3 on the road.
