Cubbies even record at 3 with sweep of 'Jints

The Cubs, after getting swept by the 56 Cardinals to start the season, swept the San Francisco Giants, in their initial home series in the friendly confines. After getting shutdown by Cardinal pitching, the Cubs hit the ball much better as they evened therir record at 3-3.

Game 1 - Cubs 4, Giants 3

Ron Halicki, for the Giants, faced off against the old veteran, Ken Holtzman and it was the Giants who struck first.Gary Matthews led off the 2nd with a walk and moved up on a Willie Montanez ground ball. After a passed ball and a Bruce Miller double the Giants had a 1-0 lead. The score was 1-0 going to the 7th. The first 2 batters for the Giants were put out, but a Von Joshua single, followed by a Derrell Thomas double and then a Chris Speier single, and the Ginats had a 3-0 lead. The Cubs answered in the bottom of the 7th when Steve Ontiveros singled. Jerry Martin then tripled Ontiveros home and then a ground ball by Steve Thompson plated Martin. It was 3-2. The bottom of the 9th saw Bill Buckner lead off with a triple. Barry Foote knocked in Buckner with a single and it was tied and the game went to extra innings. The 10th was scoreless and the Cubs shutdown the Giants in the top of the 11th. Buckner lead off the 11th and Foote followed with another base hit. Steve Ontiveros moved them up with a fielders choice and a Jerry Martin single knocked int he game winner and the final was Chicago 4 San Francisco 3.

Game 2 - Cubs 6, Giants 2

Rick Reuschel won his first of the year, scattering 8 hits and going the distance. A dinger by Barry
Foote opened the scoring for the Cubs in the 2nd with his first HR of the year. A Bill Buckner RBI double and a Dave Kingman 2 run shot in the 3rd put Chicago up 4-2. San Francisco cut the Cub lead in half as Derrell Thomas walked and Willie Montanez doubled. With runners on 2nd and 3rd, Chris Speier knocked both in with a single up the middle. The Cubs answered with 2 more runs in the 5th highlighted by a Bill Buckner HR and the Cubs won it, 6-2.

Game 3 - Cubs 7, Giants 1

The Cubbies finished off the road sweep of the 'Jints in this 7-1 blowout. Lynn McGlothen and John "Count how many runs he gives up" Montefusco were going stride for stride until "The Count" couldn't be counted on any further. Chicago scored 3 in the 5th to make it 5-1 and two more in the 8th to blow it open. Barry Foote and Bobby Murcer each hit homers, with Foote having 4 RBI's on the day. McGlothen went the distance and fanned 7. His lone run allowed can off an RBI single by catcher Dave Rader to score Chris Speier in the 2nd.
