Tigers take 2 of 3 and knock Bosox out of Wild Card race

9/27 – 9/29 – Tiger Stadium

Gernert52 GAME 1 – Red Sox 8, Tigers 3 - Ellis Kinder left due to injury after 1 2/3 innings of work.  That didn’t stop the Bosox hitters from destroying Tiger starter Foytack (4-2, 4.14) who gave up 7 in almost 7 innings of work.  Dick Gernert was the hitting star as he went 2 for 5 with 4 RBI and his 3rd homer of the season.  Ray Boone went 3 for 3 with 2 RBI for Motown in a losing cause.  The loss eliminated Detroit from Wild Card consideration.

GAME 2 – Tigers 11, Red Sox 0Billy Hoeft (2-4,Hoeft57 4.54) saved his best outing of the season for his last.  In his KOD swan song Hoeft fanned 10 Bosox and scattered 5 hits to record the complete game shutout.  Charlie Maxwell went 4 for 5 for the Tigers who banged out 17 hits.  Ray Boone also had a great day at the plate going 3 for 4.

kaline57 GAME 3 – Tigers 15, Red Sox 1 – Needing a win to force a play in game for the Wild Card the Bosox blew a stinker by allowing 11 runs in the 1st inning.  Boston needed 3 pitchers during that frame just to escape.  Jim Bunning (4-5, 2.60), who struggled to get run support all season, had more than enough to cruise to victory.  Detroit sent 16 batters to the plate in the 1st.  Al Kaline had the big blow of the inning with a 3 run shot to cap off the landslide.  Kaline had 7 RBI on the day, which included his 2nd 3 run homer in the 5th.
